Union ends losing streak with two wins at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- With 27 hits on the day, the Union College baseball team defeated Skidmore, 9-4 and 6-5, in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Castle Diamond.

The wins improve the Dutchmen to 12-10 in conference action, while Skidmore falls to 9-11 in the Liberty League. Union will secure a spot in the playoffs with at least one win in tomorrow's doubleheader against Skidmore.

Sean Cullen led the Dutchmen going 5-for-8 at (.625), hitting one double and one home run, whil also scoring three runs and batting in four runs. In the second game of the day, three Dutchmen had three-hit games, Joe Ganim, Anthony Amoroso and Matt Toy. Despite Union recording 17 hits in the nightcap, Skidmore held the Dutchmen to just six runs.

In the first game, Union scored all nine runs in the third inning. The Dutchmen scored the runs on four hits and one error, as three batters were walked and two were hit. The inning was puncuated by Cullen's three-run home run which put the Dutchmen up 9-0 with two outs left in the inning. The Thoroughbreds didn't give up however, and scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh before Union could close out the win.

Game two saw the Dutchmen holding a late shutout only to have Skidmore nearly take the lead. Union scored solo runs in the second and third innings and three in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead. In the top of the eighth, the Dutchmen added a sixth run to go up 6-0, but Skidmore would end up scoring five runs on three hits and one error in the bottom of the frame to make it a one-run game.

However, Charlie Hoover and Steve Acquario combined to close out the game without conceding a hit to the Throroughbreds in the final 1.1 innings.

The Dutchmen return to Shuttleworth Park for the final home games of the 2019 season tomorrow, May 5. Union hosts Skidmore for senior day with the first pitch scheduled for noon (ET).
