ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Union College baseball team ended its season with a 6-4 loss to RPI in the wild card game of the 2019 Liberty League Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Towers Field.
The Dutchmen finish the season with an overall record of 18-21, while the Engineers improve to 20-17 and go on to play against No. 1 Rochester in the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
Rensselaer used strong pitching to start off the contest, as Brendan McNerney threw 11 strikeouts and only conceded 2 hits in the first 5.2 innings. RPI got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.
In the seventh,
Chris O'Brien reached on a fielder's choice which allowed
Jack Koch to score. A later error on a pick off attempt allowed O'Brien to score for the Dutchmen's second run of the inning. Unfortunately, the Engineers scored three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-2 lead.
O'Brien again led the charge, this time hitting a two-run bomb over the left-center wall to make it 6-4 in the top of the ninth. However, the Dutchmen's rally would fall short as RPI closed out the inning for the 6-4 win.
