SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's soccer team doubled up William Paterson University in shots during the second half and had several good opportunities to score, but a goal eluded the Dutchwomen as the home team dropped a tough 1-0 match to the Pioneers in the teams' 2019 season-opener on Friday afternoon at College Park Field.
The Dutchwomen had arguably the better of the opportunities in the first half despite being outshot by an 8-6 margin. Senior
Linsey Giles had a good look on goal in the seventh minute that required a save from WPU's Erica Hickey and sophomore
Fiona Zimmerman had another good look later in the half that was stopped. Sophomore
Bella Dworkin also just missed in the 43rd minute, when her free kick from 25 yards out caromed off the crossbar and stayed out of the goal.
At the other end of the field, junior
Alison Sorkenn made five saves to keep the game scoreless at the half.
William Paterson got one good chance early in the second half and Marisa Adelman took advantage, streaking in from the left side and finding the net from a tough angle to put the visitors up by a goal. The home team kept the pressure on after the goal, but could not find the equalizer.
Union (0-1) finished the match with a 16-13 edge in shots, including a 10-5 advantage over the final 45 minutes of action. Sorkenn finished the afternoon with eight saves, while Hickey made six saves in the shutout win for WPU.
Union will return to action tomorrow, when the Dutchwomen host Curry College beginning at 2 p.m. at College Park Field.
