Field Hockey Comes Up Short at William Paterson

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson University scored once in the 12th minute and Union College could not manage an equalizer the rest of the way as the Pioneers defeated the Dutchwomen by a 1-0 score in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday night at Wightman Stadium.

The only goal of Wednesday's game off the stick of William Paterson's Shannon Super at the 11:33 mark of the first quarter, when a deflected shot from the top of the circle got past junior Heather Poisson. Union had a pair of penalty corners after the goal and senior Charlotte Leyland had a shot cleared off the line by a Pioneer defender, which allowed the home team to keep their 1-0 lead after one quarter.

The Dutchwomen put more shots on goal than their counterparts in both the second and third quarters, but the visitors were unable to find the back of the net. Poisson added three saves to her total in the fourth quarter to keep Union within a goal, but the team could not get the game-tying tally.

William Paterson finished with a 14-9 edge in total shots, but Union held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Tara Weniger made five saves for the shutout win, while Poisson made four stops in a losing effort. Leyland led Union with five of the team's nine shots on the night.

Union will start Liberty League play on Saturday, when the Dutchwomen host Ithaca College beginning at 1 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
