Women's Tennis Opens League Play with 8-1 Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team started off its dual match and Liberty League schedule on a good note on Friday night, taking down Bard College by an 8-1 score at the Union Tennis Courts.

Ten different players earned at least one win on the day for Union (1-0, 1-0 Liberty League), including a pair of victories each for senior Allison Remmell and junior Cathy Xing. Six of Union's 10 winners earned the first dual match victories of their careers on Friday as well.

The Dutchwomen started off the day with a sweep of the three doubles matches, losing a combined five games. Remmell and Xing gave Union its first point with an 8-1 win at third doubles, followed closely by an 8-1 win at first doubles for senior Tal Pezzuco and freshman Marilena Karadimou. Sophomore Dana D'Onofrio and freshman Monet Riseborough completed the sweep with an 8-3 win at second doubles.

Xing earned her second win of the day with a 6-1, 6-1 win at fifth singles to put the home team a point away from victory, while junior Megan Brown clinched the win with a pair of 6-1 sets at the second flight. Freshmen Hallie Katzman and Rayna Katzman both lost just two games each in their respective third- and fourth-singles victories, followed by Remmell earning her second win of the day with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 win at sixth singles.

Freshman Sophie Brown nearly forced a third set in her first-singles match, but fell by a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) score.

Union will be right back on the courts tomorrow morning, when the Dutchwomen host ITA #17 Skidmore College beginning at 10 a.m. in Schenectady.
