Dutchwomen Earn Tie with #4 Cornell, 1-1

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Union capitalized first against the nationally-ranked Big Red, but both defenses prevented each other from scoring, as the Union College women's hockey team tied #4 Cornell, 1-1, at Messa Rink on Friday night.

Senior Katelynn Russ scored her team-leading sixth of the season to get the Dutchwomen on the board early, but Cornell scored in the second to tie it at one. With the tie on the season, Union continues with a 2-15-5 record (2-5-3 ECAC). Cornell gets just their second tie on the season and goes to 13-1-2 (7-0-2 ECAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 15:50 1st (Union 1-0) | After Cornell tried to dump the puck in its offensive end, senior Katelynn Russ grabbed the puck, and got it right past Cornell's goaltender to get the 1-0 lead to close out the first period.
  • 14:41 2nd (Cornell 1-1) | After Union tried to wrap the puck around their net, Jaime Bourbonnais grabbed it, sent it to Maddie Mills. Mills gave it to an open Kristin O'Neill, who scored right in front to tie it up and close out the second period.

GAME NOTES:

  • Shots on goal were in favor of Cornell, 34-12.
  • Russ led all Union players in shots, with 3.
  • First-year goaltender Bella McKee made 33 saves to keep the game close.

WHAT'S NEXT:
