SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Mike Concannon scored 11 of his game-high 19 points in the second half as the Union College men's basketball team snapped Hobart College's 10-game winning streak with a 71-63 victory on Tuesday night at Viniar Athletic Center.
Concannon had a big game to lead the Dutchmen, hitting 7-of-11 shots (including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc) to go with four rebounds and three steals. Classmate
Chris Lovisolo also came on strong to finish with 10 points, while senior
Kevin Jefferson and sophomore
Brian Noone netted nine points each for Union (7-4, 4-2 Liberty League).
Union took multiple shots from Hobart (11-2, 5-1 Liberty League) in the second half, but each time the home team had a response. Leading by five points early in the half, Concannon and junior
Nate Freeman knocked down back-to-back threes to give Union its first double-digit lead of the game at 49-38 with 12:59 left. A 9-1 run brought Hobart back within three at 50-47, but Jefferson hit a big three on the next possession and Concannon followed with a jumper to make it a 55-47 game with 7:06 on the clock.
After the visitors came back with seven straight points to get within a point, Lovisolo nailed the biggest shot of his short Dutchman career, a three to give Union a four-point edge with 4:15 to go. The game was still in the balance entering the final minute, but Concannon came up with a huge steal and score to make it a 67-61 game with under 50 seconds remaining that, following a key defensive stand, helped to seal the win.
Union finished the game shooting a stellar 40.6 percent from beyond the arc, sinking 13 of its 32 attempts, while also hitting 16-of-22 free throws. The Dutchmen also were very opportunistic on the defensive end, forcing 17 turnovers and converting them into 19 points at the other end.
After the teams traded baskets for the first portion of the opening half, Union used the three-pointer to make the first move of the game. Down 24-22 with under four minutes left, sophomore
Mike Manley gave Union its first lead with a three-pointer and Concannon followed with two trifectas of his own to quickly build up a 31-24 lead. Concannon then put an exclamation point on the stanza by going end-to-end to beat the buzzer and make the score 37-30 at the break.
Union will look to keep the momentum going on Friday, when the Dutchmen host Bard College beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Viniar Athletic Center.
