Dutchwomen Unable to Get Past Dartmouth

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Dartmouth and Union were close in the standings before Friday's physical conference match, but the Big Green offense was too potent for the Dutchwomen to contain, as the Union College women's hockey team fell 2-0 to Dartmouth on Friday night at Messa Rink.

First-year goaltender Bella McKee allowed no goals in the third period, which was proven to be a chippy one, as the Big Green gave Union two five-on-three power plays in the final frame alone. Regardless of those power plays, Union was unable to capitalize to get on the board. With the loss, Union falls to 5-21-5 (5-11-3 ECAC), and three points behind Saint Lawrence for the final conference playoff spot.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 8:20 1st (Dartmouth 1-0) | After a scoreless first few minutes, both teams were eager to get on the board first. Dartmouth's Jennifer Costa got the puck and was able to capitalize on a breakaway early to score. Costa's goal was unassisted.
  • 4:44 2nd (Dartmouth 2-0) | Gabby Billing and Sydney Hill were passing the puck back and forth in their offensive zone until sophomore Cassidy Michalicka was able to get ahold of it behind the net. Catherine Trevors was able to get the puck after battling with Michalicka and scored in the top right of the net to make it a 2-0 game going into the second intermission.

GAME NOTES:

  • Dartmouth outshot the Dutchwomen, by a close 36-34 margin. Union was able to have the advantage in the second and third periods combined, 27-21.
  • First-year goaltender Bella McKee made 34 saves in net for Union.
  • Sophomore Grace Heiting provided many offensive chances for Union and had 6 shots on goal individually.
  • Junior Megan Ryan, senior Rachel de Perio, and Cassidy Michalicka all blocked two shots apiece.

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • The Dutchwomen will continue their weekend homestand with #10 Harvard on Saturday, February 15. Puck drop for Senior Day is scheduled for 3 p.m., with post-game speeches by our seniors following.
