ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Freshman
Megan Lee recorded her first career double-double and the Union College defense held Bard College to 22.7 percent shooting as the Dutchwomen women's basketball team remained in the hunt for a conference tournament berth with a 60-32 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Stevenson Athletic Center.
The win for Union (10-12, 7-9 Liberty League), combined with a loss for Rochester Institute of Technology to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, keeps Union alive for the sixth and final postseason berth with two games remaining. The Dutchwomen would need to win their final two games and have RIT lose both in order to reach the postseason.
Lee had a big game in the paint for Union, netting a game-high 18 points and adding a season-best 10 boards to go with four assists and four steals. Sophomore
Amber Raisner added nine points, and both junior
IreLee Ferguson and sophomore
Laura Vinton chipped in eight apiece in a well-rounded team effort.
Union started the game slowly, going nearly five minutes without a point, but turned on the offensive jets over the next 15 minutes to take control. The Dutchwomen finished the first quarter on a 10-3 run and then outscored the Raptors 20-4 in the second stanza to take a 30-11 lead into halftime. After missing on its first nine shots, Union hit 14 of the next 26 attempts to finally break away, with Lee single-handedly outscoring Bard with 12 points during the run.
The Dutchwomen won the third quarter by a 16-9 margin, with Vinton and senior
Elly Vaughan leading a well-rounded unit with a pair of baskets apiece. Ferguson added a team-leading six points during the fourth quarter, when Union outpaced Bard 14-12 with the game no longer in doubt.
Union dominated in most categories on the way to the win, taking an incredible 30 more shots than the Raptors thanks to forcing 22 turnovers and grabbing 22 offensive rebounds that led to 25 second-chance points. Union also converted those turnovers into 21 points at the other end.
Union will close out the regular season with two road games in the North Country, beginning on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. with a must-win game against St. Lawrence University.
