POTSDAM, N.Y. – Despite a game-high 22 points and the first career double-double from sophomore
Amber Raisner, the Union College women's basketball team finished off the 2019-20 season on the wrong end of a 62-55 score at Clarkson University in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon.
Raisner had a big game for Union (10-14, 7-11 Liberty League), hitting 8-of-13 shots from the field and adding a career-best 11 rebounds. Senior
Elly Vaughan added 11 points and seven rebounds and junior
Corina Lindsay chipped in 10 points as well.
Union started the game strong, hitting four of its first five shots and taking an early 9-2 lead. However, it was all Clarkson over the final 6:25, as the home team scored the final 15 points to take a 17-9 lead into the second. The second stanza followed a similar script, as Union scored the first eight points to get back to even, only to have the Golden Knights end on a 9-2 run to take a 26-19 lead into the half.
After 8-of-25 shooting in the first half, the Dutchwomen heated up in the third quarter, hitting 8-of-11 shots (72.7 percent) to get back in the game. Five straight points from sophomore
Laura Vinton early in the quarter kickstarted the offense, but it was a late 10-2 run – featuring four points from Vaughan and threes from Lindsay and senior
Joana Santos – that got Union within a point (40-39) headed into the fourth.
The momentum was short-lived in the final frame, however, as Clarkson scored the first nine points to take a 49-39 advantage with 6:02 remaining. A pair of Vaughan buckets stemmed the tide momentarily, but the Dutchwomen could get no closer than eight until a Lindsay three at the final buzzer provided the final margin.
Union finished the game with a higher shooting percentage (41.5 percent) than Clarkson (40.4 percent) and made one more field goal, but the Golden Knights outscored the Dutchwomen 14-5 at the charity stripe to pull out the win.
Saturday's game marks the final collegiate contest for Union's three seniors, Vaughan, Santos and
Hailey McCall, but the Dutchwomen will return many key pieces as the team looks to get back to the postseason in 2020-21.
