Dutchwomen End Season with Loss at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Union College women's hockey team battled hard against the top ranked team in Division I, but the Dutchwoman comeback attempt came up short to #1 Cornell, 5-3, at Lynah Rink on Saturday afternoon, in the team's season finale.

Senior Cheyenne Harris tied for the team lead with two points, and with her two helpers she became the school's all-time leader with 37, breaking the record of 36 held by Christine Valente '15. Senior goaltender Amelia Murray made her final start in net for her Union career and stopped 36 shots from the Big Red. With the loss on the season, the Dutchwomen end the season with a record of 5-24-5 (5-14-3 ECAC). At the same time, Cornell will go into ECAC playoffs as the number one seed, finishing the season with an overall record of 24-1-3, and complete their ECAC slate undefeated at 18-0-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • 4:38 1st (Cornell 1-0) | Kendra Nealey gave Micah Zandee-Hart a cross-ice pass near the blue line. Zandee-Hart gave Maddie Mills the long feed from the left circle, and Mills ramped it home in the front to get the first goal past Murray.
  • 11:56 1st (Cornell 2-0) | Jaime Bourbonnais, one of the top defenders in the nation, shot the puck toward the net, and the puck was redirected in up front by Gillis Frechette to increase the Big Red lead to two. Sam Burke was credited with the secondary assist on the day.
  • 3:59 2nd (Cornell 3-0) | Izzy Daniel got the puck from the corner and passed it to Kendra Nealey, who scored using two of the Dutchwomen as a double-screen in front. Nealey's goal was her first of the season.
  • 15:08 2nd (Cornell 4-0) | Zandee-Hart gave a centering pass to Joie Phelps, who scored in the front after her shot was redirected off the backside of her skate to make it a 4-0 game to close out the second frame.
  • 6:58 3rd (Union 4-1) | Senior Katelynn Russ dumped the puck in from center, and classmate Rachel de Perio got possession and found the net to get Union on the board. De Perio's goal, her sixth of the season, was the first goal of the third period. Senior Cheyenne Harris was credited with the secondary assist on the play.
  • 10:09 3rd (Cornell 5-1) | The first shot from Bourbonnais was blocked away but used the rebound to set Mills up to score Cornell's fifth on the power-play.
  • 13:17 3rd (Union 5-2) |  Russ shot the puck from the middle, and it went up and over Cornell goaltender Lindsay Browning and into the net to make it a 5-2 game on the power play. Sophomore Maia Martinez and Harris were credited with assists on the power play tally.
  • 16:03 3rd (Union 5-3) | Emily King shot a one-timer on the faceoff dot, and it trickled in past Browning, and made it a 5-3 game, with another power-play goal. Feeds from seniors Ava Reynolds and sophomore Grace Heiting assisted King on the play.
