THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Senior Mary Trop led all players with a career-high five goals and seven points as the Union College women's lacrosse team started the 2020 season on the right foot with an 18-6 victory over Maritime (N.Y.) College in non-conference action on Thursday evening.
 
Trop had a career game to start off her senior season, scoring five times on just six shots and adding two assists in the win. Junior Lindsay Gerrato also scored five times with one assist for six points to go with 10 draw controls, while junior Isabel Bush recorded a career-best four points on two goals and two helpers. Four Dutchwomen also scored in their collegiate debuts as well, led by freshman Sydney McPartlon with two scores.
 
After more than seven minutes of scoreless action, Gerrato opened the scoring with 22:49 remaining and the floodgates opened soon after that, with McPartlon and Trop scoring after Gerrato controlled the two ensuing draws. After the Privateers got on the board, the visitors scored four goals in the next 2:15 thanks to two each from Gerrato and Trop.
 
The Dutchwomen strung together another set of three goals in 78 seconds, including two in seven seconds after freshman Dana Truini controlled the draw and went straight to goal for her first collegiate tally. Sophomore Kit Christian and freshman Elena Gerrato both scored later in the frame for Union, giving the visitors a 13-2 lead after 30 minutes.
 
The Union attack slowed considerably in the second half, which started off with a goal from senior Mallory Toolan 2:24 in off a Gerrato feed. McPartlon, Gerrato, Bush and Trop all scored one more time each in the second stanza to account for the final team total.
 
Union finished the game outshooting Maritime by a 36-9 margin and the Dutchwomen controlled 16-of-24 draws as well. Senior Ellie Taney got the start and made two saves in the first half to earn the victory, while sophomore Jenna Paszek and junior Olivia Leong finished off the game in the second stanza.
 
The Dutchwomen will return home to play the next six games at Frank Bailey Field, beginning on Tuesday with a matchup against SUNY Cortland slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
