After Slow Start, #11 Men's Lax Blows By Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The No. 11 Union College men's lacrosse team outscored Babson College 15-4 over the final three quarters to overcome an early deficit and roll to a 15-7 non-conference victory on a chilly Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

Senior captain Kerry Lyne led the way for the Dutchmen with five goals, followed by sophomore Brian Davis with four points on a goal and three assists. Junior Hayden Frey added three goals and senior Michael Sands scored a pair as well for Union (2-0).

The Dutchmen took time to heat up on a cold Saturday afternoon, as the team was outshot by an 8-6 margin over the first 15 minutes and allowed Babson to score the quarter's only three goals. Senior Graham Goldheim made four saves in the opening quarter to keep the team in the game despite the slow start.

The offense finally woke up in the second stanza, outscoring Babson 5-1 in the frame to take a 5-4 lead into halftime. Lyne almost singlehandedly brought the Dutchmen back, scoring back-to-back goals twice during the run, with junior Aidan Flood also finding the net as well. Lyne's fourth of the game came while man-up off a feed from Davis, making the score 5-4 with 4:28 left.

Frey set the tone for the third quarter by scoring 13 seconds in, then Sands added his first of the game less than a minute later. Man-up goals from Lyne and junior Keaton McCann continued Union's 4-0 run start the quarter, as the Dutchmen outscored the Beavers 6-3 to take an 11-7 lead into the fourth.

The visitors then closed the door with the only four goals of the fourth frame, led by two from Frey and one each by junior Quinn Helmig and sophomore Jack Donahue.

After keeping the team in the game during the first quarter, Goldheim needed to make only three saves the rest of the way, finishing the game with seven stops on 14 attempts. The Dutchmen outshot the Beavers 41-16 over the final 45 minutes to finish with a 47-24 edge on the day.

The Dutchmen will face a huge early-season test on Wednesday, when the team welcomes current #4 Williams College to Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium for a 5 p.m. showdown in Schenectady.
