AUBURNDALE, FLA. – The Union College baseball team dropped two games in a doubleheader to Trine on Sunday, by scores of 3-0 and 4-2, closing out their opening weekend of play at the RussMatt Invitational.
Despite the pair of losses, the Dutchmen still had a successful open to the 2020 campaign winning five of eight games over a four-day span.
In the first game, Trine used solid pitching to shutout the Dutchmen 3-0 with only giving up four hits to Union.
Game two saw the Thunder take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Union scored its first runs of the day in the second inning, as
William Bellamy and
Jack DiNanno drove in a run each to make it a one-run game.
Unfortunately, Trine kept Union from further scoring and added a lone run in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 4-2 game.
Overall for the weekend, Both
Kevin Chaimowitz and
Sean Cullen lead the team with nine hits each. Chaimowitz finished the weekend batting 9-for-23 (.391) with one double, one triple and one home run, while Cullen finished 9-for-27 (.333) with one double, one triple and two home runs. Out of players that played in all eight games,
Chris Symington led the Dutchmen with a .412 average, earning seven hits on 17 at-bats.
The Dutchmen are scheduled to jump into Liberty League play at home on March 21-22, hosting a three-game series against RIT.
