SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The #10 Union College men's lacrosse team outscored #12 St. John Fisher College by a 7-1 margin in the pivotal third quarter as the Dutchmen knocked off the Cardinals by a 16-11 score in non-conference action on Wednesday night at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
 
Senior captain Kerry Lyne had another excellent effort to lead Union (4-1), netting a game-high five goals and adding an assist for a game-high six points. Classmate Michael Sands also recorded a career-best five points on two goals and three assists, while junior Aidan Flood chipped in three goals as well.
 
Lyne got the scoring started 58 seconds into the game, followed by Flood's first of the night with 11:39 left. The teams then alternated scoring the next nine goals of the game, as the Dutchmen had a response to every Cardinal tally in maintaining a slim one-goal lead – including a Sands tally just six seconds after a Fisher goal that came off a faceoff win by senior Patrick Regan.
 
St. John Fisher (3-2) finally broke the string of alternating goals with two in the final 1:36 of the second quarter to take a 7-6 lead into halftime. The Dutchmen held a 17-14 edge in shots over the first 30 minutes.
 
The game changed dramatically in the third quarter, with the home team scoring seven of the eight goals to blow open the contest. After nearly seven minutes of scoreless action, Flood opened up the floodgates, followed 59 seconds later by a man-up goal from sophomore Brian Davis and then another Lyne tally 13 seconds after that. The Cardinals got back within a goal at 5:23, but Regan won the subsequent faceoff cleanly and went right to goal for his first score of the season just seven seconds later.
 
Goals by junior Keaton McCann and Sands extended the lead before junior Hayden Frey put an exclamation point on the quarter with his sixth of the year in the waning seconds. The Dutchmen then put the game away with the first three goals of the fourth quarter to double up Fisher's score by a 16-8 margin, That run allowed the home team to weather a brief late-game rally by Fisher that made the final score closer than it appeared.
 
Union finished the game with a slight 36-33 edge in shots. Senior Graham Goldheim made eight of his 12 saves in the second half and also grabbed five ground balls to earn his fourth victory of the season.
 
Union is scheduled to begin Liberty League play next Saturday against Vassar College. Game time is set for 3 p.m. in Schenectady.
