Volleyball Splits Two Matches at Home Tri-Match

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon at the Union Tri-Match, sweeping Plattsburgh State University by a 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-22) score before suffering the same fate at the hands of St. John Fisher College, 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20).

Sophomore Morgan Bohlke led Union (5-14) with 14 kills on the afternoon, followed by classmate Keara Page and senior Jessica Siragusa with 12 kills apiece. Page also had a great day at the net with three solo blocks, while senior Olivia Salvador led the team in digs in both matches and finished the day with 26.

Union 3, Plattsburgh State 0

Junior Denesha Lafontant led all players with eight kills and added three blocks in the first match of the day while classmate Haley Kresch also had a big outing, recording a double-double with 16 assists and 13 digs and also adding a match-high six service aces.

Plattsburgh jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the opening set, and built its lead up to as many as eight points at 16-8 and 17-9. But the home team used a 9-1 run to storm back and tie the score, with three kills by Siragusa leading the Union charge. After the Cardinals scored two points to retake the lead, Union closed decisively with a 7-2 run, with a Siragusa ace closing out the frame.

Union used that momentum to come out firing in the second set, scoring 10 straight points after a pair of Plattsburgh tallies to take early control. Kresch had four aces and two assists during the run, as the Dutchwomen were never challenged in taking a 2-0 lead. The home team then again started strong in the third set with six straight points, and Union never trailed as the Dutchwomen completed the sweep.

St. John Fisher 3, Union 0

Bohlke led the home team with nine kills while Page added seven kills and three blocks in the second match of the day, as the Dutchwomen hung with a strong St. John Fisher team before coming up just short in all three sets.

The Dutchwomen took an early 9-6 lead in the opening set before Fisher rattled off seven straight points to take back the advantage. The home team still hung with the Cardinals and eventually knotted the score at 19 on a Bohlke kill, but SJFC closed on a 6-2 run to take the opening frame.

Union battled hard in the second set as well, using a 6-1 run to take a 14-12 lead, but six straight Fisher points soon after gave the visitors some breathing room on the way to a set-two win. The third set featured several runs from each side, the last of which was a 6-0 stretch from Fisher that allowed the visitors to take a 20-15 lead and eventually close out the match.

The Dutchwomen will close out Liberty League play next weekend at Viniar Athletic Center, beginning on Friday at 7 p.m. against Clarkson University.
