Field Hockey Comes Back for OT Win on Senior Night

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore Grace Krebs scored 44 seconds into the overtime period as the Union College field hockey team finished off the 2021 season with a thrilling 3-2 (OT) comeback victory over Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday night at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of1985 Stadium.

The Dutchwomen earned the first possession of overtime and quickly moved the ball downfield, earning a penalty corner 31 seconds into extra time. While the shot by junior Jill Bove was saved off the insert, Union regained control and a pass from the near side was tipped by Bove to Krebs, who turned and fired into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

Union (7-10) came back from a goal down on two occasions before Krebs' tally, getting goals from sophomores Sophie Ruhl and Ella Brinkley in the first and fourth quarters, respectively.

Stevens scored the first goal of the game midway through the first quarter, but Union responded for the first time in the waning seconds of the opening frame. After a quick counter attack, a shot by Bove was deflected in front by junior Caroline Werner to Ruhl at the near post, and she put it home for her third goal of the year with just six seconds left.

The Ducks went ahead again with less than two minutes remaining in the second stanza, and Union did well to weather the storm in the third quarter, as the home team was outshot 6-1 but did not concede a goal. Then with 5:35 remaining in regulation, Brinkley collected a loose ball off the goalie and slotted it home for her first collegiate goal to knot the score.

Stevens applied plenty of pressure after Brinkley's goal, earning four penalty corners, but the defensive unit stood tall and senior Heather Poisson made one save to send the game to overtime.

The Ducks led in shots, 17-8, but the senior tandem of Poisson and Gabriella Stein combined for nine saves in their final game. Stein made three saves in the first half, while Poisson came on at halftime to record six saves in the second half.

Saturday's game is the final collegiate contest for Union's seven seniors: Poisson, Stein, Sydney Walters, Cristina Boudreau, Katherine Sadak, Anna Trancozo and Emma Davis.
