SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's hockey team lost 4-0 to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Friday evening in their home opener at Messa Rink. This was the Dutchwomen's first loss of the year.
RPI got the scoring started in the first period when Reina Jahnke scored in the slot to take a 1-0 lead at the 5:11 mark of the period. This was followed by a goal scored by Delaney Weiss, from the top of the right circle that beat sophomore
Olivia Rinzel over her glove. Union was 0-2 on the power-play in the period, but led in the shot department 14-7.
In the second period RPI extended their lead to three when Mika Jahnke scored at the 9:14 mark. This period was littered with penalties but neither team was able to score on the advantage. Union had to make a 5-on-3 kill to start the period as well.
Julia Blitz scored in the third, giving RPI a four-goal lead and the win at the 17:56 mark of the third period. Neither team was able to score on the ppwer play during the game. Union and RPI tied with 30 shots a piece. Rinzel stopped 26 in the effort.
Union (2-1-0, 0-1-0) will look for a bounce-back win and a split of the weekend series when they drop the puck in Troy, N.Y. against RPI tomorrow at 3 p.m..
