Men's Hoops Sweeps Weekend with 84-65 Clarkson Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Justin Regis led four Dutchmen in double figures with a career-high 16 points and seven rebounds as the Union College men's basketball team improved to 2-0 in Liberty League play with an 84-65 victory over Clarkson University on Saturday afternoon at Viniar Athletic Center.

Union (4-2, 2-0 Liberty League) received scoring from many sources on Saturday, with Regis hitting 3-of-4 shots from beyond the arc to lead the charge. Seniors Temi George and Brian Noone chipped in 15 points apiece, with George adding five rebounds and Noone dishing out five assists. Classmate Mike Manley also recorded 14 points and a game-high six assists and junior Mike Caporale added eight points for the home team as well.

Clarkson hung with Union early in the contest, leading by as many as five after a Joe Lucas jumper put the visitors up 17-12 with 11:02 left in the first half. But Union exploded soon after that, rattling off 21 straight points to build up a 36-19 edge with 4:36 on the clock. The Dutchmen connected on 7-of-9 attempts from the field and hit all five shots from downtown during the stretch, with back-to-back threes from senior Chris Lovisolo and sophomore Luke McGarrity closing the run.

Union led by as many as 19 in the half after a Regis free throw in the final minute, as the home team went into the locker rooms up 42-28. The Dutchmen shot 47.1 percent (16 of 34) in the opening 20 minutes and converted nine Clarkson turnovers into 16 points.

The Dutchmen were never threatened in the second stanza, as Clarkson was unable to get the deficit into single digits. Manley provided the highest margin of the afternoon with a pair of free throws with 12:02 that put Union up 20 at 61-41, as Union continued to put the heat on the Golden Knights with 14-of-25 shooting from the field.

The home team shot over 50 percent from the field for the first time this season, connecting on 30-of-59 shots, and also made 8-of-20 attempts from long range and hit 16-of-21 free throws. Clarkson, meanwhile, shot just 35.7 percent (25 of 70) from the field.

Union will look to keep the momentum going on Tuesday, when the team travels to Vassar College for a 7:30 p.m. conference tipoff with the Brewers in Poughkeepsie.
