Gerrato Reaches 100 Points as Union Fights Off Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Union College women's lacrosse team scored the final four goals of the game to break open a back-and-forth second half as the Dutchwomen defeated Vassar College by a 19-16 score in a non-conference matchup on Friday afternoon at Weinberg Field.

Senior Lindsay Gerrato led all players with a career-high eight points, scoring five goals and adding three assists, and with her first point of the game became the 20th player in Union women's lacrosse history to record 100 career points. She also moved into 15th place all-time at Union with 90 career goals, as she closes in on becoming the 11th Dutchwoman to reach triple figures in that category.

In addition, sophomore Sydney McPartlon tied for the game-high with six goals, while junior Grace Heiting also had a huge game for Union (3-3) with a goal and six assists, the most assists by a Dutchwoman in a game since Maggie Comiskey '16 had nine against Vassar on April 29, 2016.

Vassar (2-2) was paced by Alessandra Fable, who scored six goals and added an assist for seven points.

After Fable opened the scoring for the Brewers, Union scored six of the next seven goals to take a 6-1 lead 10:19 into the contest. McPartlon had three of the six goals for the visitors, while Heiting chipped in a goal and three assists, and senior Isabel Bush and sophomore Drew Charlton also found the net.

The Dutchwomen maintained a four-goal lead with 9:49 left in the first half after Gerrato's first goal of the game, but Vassar scored the final three goals of the first half and the first two of the second to take an 11-10 lead 5:06 into the second stanza.

Most of the second half saw neither team lead by more than one goal, as every possession seemed to take on greater importance. Vassar took its last lead of the game with 8:35 left, when Caeli Porette scored to give the Brewers a 16-15 advantage, but Union closed the game with four unanswered tallies to secure the victory.

McPartlon knotted the score at 16 with 7:28 left, before Gerrato put Union ahead for good by scoring a man-down goal  with 3:53 on the clock. With Vassar looking to tie the score, senior Caroline Hirt forced a turnover that eventually led to McPartlon's sixth of the game from Heiting that helped to seal the victory with less than 90 seconds remaining.

Union finished the game with a 40-27 edge in shots. First-year Hannah Dubinsky earned her first collegiate victory for Union by making four saves in 37:32 of relief work, while Lauren Johns kept Vassar in the game by stopping 12 shots.

Union will return to action on Tuesday, when the Dutchwomen make up their Liberty League game with Skidmore College beginning at 6 p.m. in Saratoga Springs.
