Strong Second Half Lifts Union WLAX Over Vassar

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's lacrosse team outscored Vassar College by a 13-4 margin over the final 36 minutes of the game as the Dutchwomen picked up a 17-9 victory in Liberty League action on Friday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

Senior Lindsay Gerrato led Union (2-1, 2-1 Liberty League) with a game-high five points on four goals and an assist as well as a game-high seven draw controls. Junior Grace Heiting had another solid effort with three goals and an assist, while senior Isabel Bush added three goals and classmate Ava Hultgren added two goals and an assist.

The Union defensive unit also performed very well, causing 13 of Vassar's 33 turnovers and grabbing 32 ground balls. Junior Elizabeth Hernberg led the defensive effort with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers, while senior Kat Heaney added five ground balls as well.

Vassar (0-1, 0-1 Liberty League) got the scoring started with Maddy Kretten's goal 3:56 into the contest, and the Brewers added two more goals to take an early 3-1 lead. Union tied the game twice on goals by first-year Anna Smith and Hultgren, but the visitors went back in front for the last time on Caeli Porette's second of the game with 6:17 left in the first half.

But the home team used one final push before halftime to take control, scoring the final three goals of the stanza. Bush scored her first of the game with 5:45 left to tie the score, followed just over a minute later by sophomore Dana Truini giving Union its first lead of the day. Vassar had a chance to get back to even when Union took a pair of yellow cards, but instead it was Heiting with a pretty man-down goal that put the Dutchwomen up 7-5 at the half.

The second half was almost all Union, as the home team outscored the visitors by a 10-4 margin to secure the win. After Gerrato and Porette traded goals to start the period, Union scored three times in 1:19 to take control, with Heiting, Gerrato and sophomore Sydney McPartlon all finding the net. Bush made it a 4-0 run with her second of the afternoon less than two minutes after Gerrato, and two goals in 26 seconds from Smith and Hultgren helped put the game away early.

Union finished the game doubling up Vassar in shots, 34-17. Junior Jenna Paszek made six saves to complement a strong defensive effort in front of her, while Lauren Johns made 14 stops for Vassar.

The Dutchwomen will complete their weekend series with Vassar tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Poughkeepsie.
