ITHACA, N.Y. – John Sramac scored the game-winning goal with seven seconds left in regulation as Ithaca College outscored #8 Union College by a 4-1 margin in the fourth quarter to deal the Dutchmen an 11-10 defeat in Liberty League action at Higgins Stadium on Wednesday.
Union (3-1, 2-1 Liberty League) was led by senior
Aidan Flood, who had five total points on three goals and two assists. Juniors
Keaton McCann (one goal, two assists) and
Peter Burnes (one goal, one assist) and senior
Hayden Frey (two goals) all added multi-point performances as well for the Dutchmen.
The Dutchmen wasted no time in the first quarter jumping out to a 2-0 lead with Flood and senior
Matthew Georgiades scoring in the opening two minutes, but the Bombers answered with two of their own, tying the game at two with 7:57 left in the opening frame. In the final eight minutes, first-year
Peter Kip and McCann brought Union's total to four before Ithaca's Blake Eischen made it a one-goal game heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter was a near mirror image of the first as the Dutchmen scored two quick goals from Frey and junior
Brian Davis in the opening 1:12 before the Bombers answered right back. With three unanswered goals, Ithaca tied the game up at six before Burnes added his first of the game. Neither team scored in the quarter's final 6:31, as the Dutchmen defense – led by seniors
Chris Kelly,
John Blomquist,
Ryan Puglisi and
Quinn Helmig – helped Union take a 7-6 lead into halftime.
Both defenses continued to assert their will in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Flood ended the scoring drought with back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart to give Union a 9-6 lead with 7:29 left, but Ithaca (4-2, 2-1 Liberty League) got one goal back later in the period. The visitors still held a 9-7 lead heading to the fourth frame, but the lead could have been much larger if not for eight saves by Ithaca's Connor Thornton that kept his team in the game.
Those missed opportunities came back to haunt Union in the fourth quarter, as the Bombers scored two quick goals to tie the game at nine before taking their first lead of the game with 6:11 to go. Frey scored his second of the day to tie the game at 10 with 4:51 left, and Union subsequently had three possessions with the chance to take the lead, but came up empty each time. The Bombers managed to secure the final possession and it was the decisive one, as Sramac scored with seven seconds left in regulation to give Ithaca the upset victory.
The shots were even at 41 apiece, as were the ground ball totals at 27 each. Thornton came up huge for Ithaca with 15 saves in the win, while first-year
Dan Donahue made 10 saves for Union in a losing effort.
Union will return to action on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. for another Liberty League matchup against Clarkson University.
