Softball Swept by Oneonta in Non-Conference Play

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Union College softball team could not get the offense going on Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader with SUNY Oneonta, dropping both games by the scores of 4-1 and 1-0 at the Red Dragon Softball Field.

Game One: Oneonta 4, Union 1

Union struggled to get the big hit in the first game of the day, as the visitors left eight runners on base in a 4-1 loss.

Union loaded the bases but could not score in the top of the second, and Oneonta quickly got on the board in the bottom half as an attempted double steal allowed a runner to cross the plate.

After Oneonta added two more in the bottom of the third, Union got on the board in the fourth thanks to an RBI single from sophomore Tara Hartnett to score senior Makayla Koehler. But that was all the Dutchwomen could get off the tandem of Kathryn Davies and Marissa Dionisio, who combined to allow one run on six hits.

Sophomore Amanda Granato (1-6) took the loss for Union, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits in 3.2 innings.

Game Two: Oneonta 1, Union 0

The second game of the day was a classic pitcher's duel between Koehler and Oneonta's Lauren Weber, with both pitchers posting zeroes until a leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh won it for the Red Dragons.

Senior Stuart Buxton had two hits for Union in the game, but the Dutchwoman lineup mustered just five hits against Weber and only had one player reach third base.

Koehler (1-5) limited Oneonta to just four hits through the first six innings, allowing just one runner to reach third base. But she ended up as the hard-luck loser after Meaghan Raleigh led off the seventh inning with a solo homer to left field that gave the home team a win and a sweep.

Union will return to action this week with a rare midweek four-game series with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, beginning with two games in Troy on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m.
