Dutchwomen Fall to #19 William Smith in Conference Semis

GENEVA, N.Y. - The third-seeded Union College women's lacrosse team fell to second-seeded and IWLCA #19 William Smith College in a 19-4 loss in the 2021 Liberty League Tournament Semifinals at Boswell Field at David J. Urrick Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

The Dutchwomen returned to the postseason today for the first time since 2016 after finishing third in the conference. While Union had hope of an upset, the Herons offense ended up taking control for most of the game.

The game started with a goal for each team in the first three minutes. Senior Isabel Bush scored the first goal for the Dutchwomen with an assist from fellow senior Caroline Hirt. Senior Courtney Cronin netted another goal for Union with 12 minutes left in the first half, but not before William Smith scoreD five straight to take a 6-1 lead. First-year Dana Nelson also scored in the opening half, but it was not enough to hold down the Herons, who led 12-3 going into the second half.

The second stanza continued to be very similar to the first, with William Smith going on a 6-0 run to take an 18-3 advantage. Senior Lindsay Gerrato scored Union's only goal of the half with seven minutes left in the game. With a final point from William Smith in the last two minutes, the final score was 19-4 in Union's final game this season.

Shots were 42-14 in favor of the Herons, as junior Jenna Paszek made 14 saves for Union.

Wednesday's game marks the final collegiate contest for Union's nine seniors: Bush, Cronin, Gerrato, Hirt, Erika Bonnist, Emma Driscoll, Kat Heaney, Ava Hultgren and Olivia Leong.
