ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of Rochester scored eight runs in the first two innings and Union College could never recover as the second-seeded Dutchmen fell short in their bid for a second Liberty League championship, falling 19-4 to the top-seeded Yellow Jackets in the Liberty League Tournament final on Saturday afternoon at Towers Field.
Senior
Joey Palko led Union (12-8) in his final collegiate game, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Classmate
Jack Koch also had a hit, drove in a run and scored once as well for the visitors.
Going up against the top offense in the Liberty League this season, the Union pitching staff had no answer to a lineup that saw seven players have multiple hits. The top of the order proved to be particularly difficult, as the trio of Aaron Whitney, Joseph Rende and John Moses combined to go 9-for-15 with six RBIs and seven runs scored.
The top of the lineup gave Rochester an immediate boost in the bottom of the first, as a single, double and home run put the home team up 3-0 three batters into the frame. The lead ballooned thanks to five runs in the second inning, which put the Dutchmen on the defensive early on.
After going hitless through the first four innings, Union finally got some good swings in the fifth inning, plating four runs. Senior
Elias Kuhns led off with a single and came home on a Koch RBI double. Palko followed with a single to score classmate
Chris Symington. Senior
Matt Toy added an RBI single of his own and first-year
Noah Schott walked with the bases loaded to keep the runs coming, but the visitors left the bases loaded and still trailed 11-4.
Rochester responded with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth to put the game away, and added four more in the seventh to account for the final score.
First-year
Bryce Fournier (0-2) got the start for Union and suffered the loss, allowing seven runs in one-plus innings. Trevor Van Allen got the start for Rochester and allowed four runs in 4.1 innings, while Dillon Bevan tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.
