WORCESTER, Mass. - The No. 14 Union College football team continued its hot start to the 2021 season, dominating the Worcester State Lancers 62-13, in a non-conference tilt Saturday afternoon at John Coughlin Memorial Field.
The last time Union scored 60 or more points in a game was on October 5, 1991 in a 66-0 victory over Norwich. The team's 49-point margin of victory is Union's largest since beating the University of Rochester by a 52-0 score on November 6, 1999.
The Union offense started early and never stopped, tallying 514 total yards - 237 passing yards and 277 rushing yards. Five different offensive players found the endzone for the Dutchmen.
Senior
William Bellamy completed 11-of-17 passes for 197 yards and four touchdowns in just over two quarters of work. First-year
Robbie Tolbert caught five receptions for 58 yards and three touchdowns in his second collegiate game, giving him a team-best four touchdowns through two games. Senior
Ike Irabor rushed for 84 yards and two touchdowns and sophomore
Michael Fiore rushed for 107 yards and a score.
For the second game in a row, the defense stymied any rushing efforts, holding the Lancers to minus 2 yards on 25 carries and only 136 yards of total offense. The defense added four sacks, a pair of interceptions and a touchdown.
Sophomore
Jimaar Edwards continued to be a threat defensively, recording four tackles and a sack, while sophomore
Calahan Kieley and senior
Seth Bartkoski also recorded a sack each.
The Dutchmen opened the scoring on the second drive of the game on a 12-yard run from Irabor. The Lancers got on the board on a 36-yard field goal, but that was as close as the Lancers would get. The Dutchmen began to pile on the points soon after, starting with a 67-yard touchdown pass from Bellamy to senior
Andre Ross Jr. for his third touchdown of the season.
Tolbert caught a pair of touchdowns and Irabor scampered home for a 49-yard touchdown run as part of a 21-0 second quarter, which put Union firmly in control.
Up 34-6 at the half, Union added another 21 points in the third quarter. Junior
Christian Maiz intercepted a pass from Worcester State quarterback Aaron-Moses Williams and ran it back 43 yards for a touchdown, while first-year
Jonathan Anderson scored their first collegiate touchdowns to help increase the lead.
In all, Union scored 49 unanswered points before Worcester State added to their score late in the fourth quarter.
Union returns home to face Springfield on Saturday, September 18. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. from Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
