SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey battled hard against a tough FDU-Florham squad on Saturday afternoon, coming up short in a 3-1 defeat at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Senior Kat Sadak had the lone goal for Union (2-3) and classmate
Heather Poisson made three saves in goal, as the two teams both put six shots on goal. The Devils finished with slight 9-7 edges in both total shots and penalty corners, as both teams had their opportunities to find the net.
After the teams combined for just one total shot during the first quarter, FDU-Florham scored twice in the second frame to take the lead. Dominique Rodriguez opened the scoring 1:08 into the second stanza off a feed from Megan Surgent. Just over four minutes later, the lead doubled when Emilee Vizzuso batted a ball out of the air and into the net at 6:24 of the second.
Sadak got Union back into the contest midway through the third quarter, when she corralled a turnover in the offensive arc and fired a shot off bodies and past FDU goalie Megan March for her second goal of the season. The one-goal deficit lasted less than four minutes, however, as Surgent scored off a penalty corner to regain the Devils' two-goal advantage.
Union will return to action on Wednesday, when the Dutchwomen head to Hartwick College for a 6 p.m. meeting with the Hawks.
