Men's Hoops Tripped Up by Bard in Double Overtime

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Union College men's basketball team hit shots late to force both overtime and a second overtime, but the magic ran out in the end as the Dutchmen suffered a tough 99-95 (2OT) defeat to Bard College in a Liberty League matchup on Friday night at Stevenson Athletic Center.

Five players reached double figures for Union (7-6, 4-3 Liberty League), led by senior Mike Manley with a game-high 24 points and six assists. Classmates Brian Noone and Temi George chipped in 19 and 18 points, respectively, with George adding a season-best 12 rebounds for his second career double-double. Junior Mike Caporale hauled in a game-high 13 caroms to go with 12 points for his first collegiate double-double, while classmate Justin Regis added 11 points and five assists.

Bard (5-6, 1-4 Liberty League) was led by Elliot Harris, who matched Manley for the game high with 24 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds, and Tyler Bruns, who finished with 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting.

Manley hit a three to give Union an 18-16 lead with 14:04 left in the first half, but the Raptors followed with a 12-0 run over the next 2:49 to open up a 28-18 lead with 11:15 on the clock. The visitors closed the gap to three on four separate occasions, but could not get back to even before the teams went to the locker rooms.

Bard shot the ball well in the opening half, connecting on 53.1 percent (17 of 32) of its attempts from the field, including seven three-pointers. Union hit 15-of-34 shots (44.1 percent) from the floor to stay in the game.

The visitors again got within three after a layup by Regis with 14:12 to go, but the Raptors responded with 11 straight points to build up their largest lead of the game at 64-50 with under 11 minutes remaining. However, the visitors replied an 11-0 run of their own to get back into the contest and eventually rallied to tie the score at 73 on a George old-fashioned three-point play with 1:55 on the clock. After the teams traded baskets, Noone hit a layup with 18 seconds left to tie the score and George forced a turnover on the final possession to send the game into overtime.

Regis had Union's first five points of the first overtime session, including three free throws after being fouled behind the arc that knotted the game at 82. Bard went up by three on a Harris jumper with 34 seconds left, but Manley responded with a clutch trey to tie the score. Bard had a golden chance to win the game when Harris was fouled with less than a second left, but he missed both freebies to give Union a second life and send the game to a second overtime.

The Raptors scored the first six points of the second extra session to take a 95-89 lead, but a three-point play by Manley got the visitors back on track. Manley got three more the conventional way to tie the score, but Harris hit another layup with 27 ticks remaining to give Bard a two-point edge. This time the last-second shot did not fall for the Dutchmen, and Bard sealed the win from the charity stripe.

Union finished the game shooting 40.2 percent (22 of 82) from the field, while Bard shot nearly 50 percent (39 of 79) for the evening, including over 50 percent (8 of 15) in the overtime sessions.

The Dutchmen will look to rebound tomorrow with a 4 p.m. tipoff against Ithaca College.
