HOBOKEN, N.J. – Stevens Institute of Technology scored on their 19th and final penalty corner of the game 2:02 into overtime as the Ducks earned a 3-2 (OT) victory over the Union College field hockey team in Union's 2022 season finale on Saturday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
The Union defense did well against an onslaught of corners for most of the afternoon, keeping the Ducks off the scoreboard on their first 18 corner attempts. But Stevens finally broke through on the five-on-three advantage in overtime, when Lynda Farinella grabbed a loose ball in the goal mouth and stuffed it home for the game-winning goal.
Senior
Emily Dawson and sophomore
Grace Goddard scored the goals for Union, who held a two-goal lead early in the third quarter before allowing three unanswered tallies. Dawson's goal is her 16th of the season, giving her sole possession of fifth place on the school single-season scoring list.
Union had the better of play in the opening 30 minutes, outshooting Stevens by a 9-4 margin and scoring the only goal. The first goal of the game came off a penalty corner as well, with Dawson taking the insert and eventually tipping home a shot by junior
Grace Krebs to put the visitors ahead.
After a scoreless second stanza, Union doubled its lead 37 seconds into the third period thanks to a Goddard tip of a shot by junior
Sophie Ruhl. Union was on its heels for much of the remainder of the quarter, with Stevens taking 11 corners and firing the final eight shots of the period. The pressure finally paid off late in the frame, with two goals in 60 seconds from Dani Hessels and Gabi Moroney that knotted the score at two.
Union nearly won the game late in regulation off a penalty corner, but senior
Caroline Werner had a shot saved and Dawson's attempt was knocked off the line by Paulina Georgoutsos to send the game to overtime.
Stevens finished the game with a 19-13 edge in shots and a 19-5 advantage in corners. First-year
Sophie Brady made four saves and junior
Haley Dineen added a defensive save for Union, while Emily Franco had four stops for the Ducks.
Despite the loss, Union's 11 victories in 2022 are tied for the fourth-most in a season in program history and are the most by a Union side since 2008.
