GENEVA, N.Y. – Hobart College scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:10 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Statesmen a 23-21 victory over Union College in a Liberty League football matchup on Saturday afternoon at Boswell Field at David J. Urick Stadium.
First-year
Nicholas Dunneman reached 100 yards receiving for the second straight game, leading all players with 145 yards on seven catches and two touchdowns. Senior
Donovan Pacatte completed 14-of-21 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns for Union (6-2, 3-1 Liberty League).
After a fumble on Union's first possession led to a Hobart field goal, Union answered right back with a four-play, 71-yard drive. After two runs by senior
Ike Irabor and a completion to senior
Andre Ross Jr. moved the ball near midfield, Pacatte unleashed a 53-yard strike to Dunneman to put Union up 7-3.
The momentum swung back Hobart's way early in the second quarter. The Statesmen got back on top thanks to a four-yard touchdown from David Krewson to Tim Denham Jr. and, after a Union drive stalled at midfield, a miscommunication on a fake punt gave the ball back to Hobart in plus territory. Eight plays later, Rayshawn Boswell found the end zone from 19 yards out to give Hobart a 17-7 lead.
But the momentum changed again after a Denham fumble on the home team's next drive. Union got the ball at the 34-yard line and needed only three plays to reach pay dirt, with Pacatte and Dunneman connecting again on a 40-yard strike to get within three. After the defense forced a quick three-and-out, Union got the ball back with 2:36 left and again marched down the field, concluding with a Pacatte touchdown pass to junior
Avery Turton with 19 seconds on the clock.
The second half was a different story for the Dutchmen, however. Union's three third-quarter drives spanned a combined 132 yards, but none resulted in points. Union took the opening kickoff and got to the Hobart 21-yard line, but went for it on 4th-and-six and came up empty. The Dutchmen again threatened on the next possession, reaching the 17-yard line before opting for a field-goal attempt that was missed, keeping the lead at 21-17.
The visitors could get nothing going on their next two drives, giving Hobart the ball back on their own 31-yard line with 2:51 remaining. Two plays later the Statesmen were in the end zone thanks to a 58-yard connection between Krewson and Rane Daramola. Union caught a break when the extra point was blocked, but Pacatte was sacked twice on the subsequent drive and Hobart (5-3, 2-2 Liberty League) was able to mostly run the clock out from there.
Union remains in the hunt for a Liberty League title despite the loss, but will need a good showing next Saturday against first-place Ithaca College. The Dutchmen host the undefeated Bombers for Senior Day beginning at noon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
