Women's Hockey Earns Program's First Win Over Boston University 3-1

BOSTON, MASS. – The Union College women's hockey team had three different scorers find the back of the net as the Dutchwomen earned their first ever win in program history over the Boston University Terriers. Union won 3-1 on Saturday afternoon from Walter Brown Arena. Union improved to 3-3 on the season.

Senior Carmen Merlo scored and added an assist, and sophomores Emma Hebert and Ashley Adams both found the back of the net as well. Senior Emily King, sophomores Maren Friday and Paige Greco, and first-year Greta Kropp all chipped in with assists.

Union earned their first ever program win over Boston University in today's 3-1 win; Union was 0-12 in entering today's game against the Terriers.

Merlo gave Union an early 1-0 lead just six and half minutes into the opening period. King poked the clearing attempt by BU away from the defender, and the loose puck drifted to Kropp, who skated towards the far post and swung a backhand pass through the slot to Merlo. Merlo one timed the puck past the netminder for her first goal of the season. Kropp earned her first collegiate point on the primary assist of Union's opening goal.

The Terriers responded just two and half minutes later with a strike of their own to even things up at one.

With just under seven minutes to play in the period, the Dutchwomen regained their lead on the power-play when Hebert ripped a shot from the point that had eyes and found the back of the net. Merlo cut inside the slot and handed off to Friday, whose drop pass was sent on frame by Hebert and found the back of the net. This was Hebert's first goal of the season and the eventual game winner.

Union outshot Boston University 15-9 in the period and led 2-1 heading into intermission.

The Terriers came out flying in the second period, but sophomore goalie Sophie Matsoukas came up big with multiple stops to preserve the lead.  The Terriers outshot Union 12-9 in the period, but still trailed 2-1.

In the opening minutes of the third period, Boston University created a 2 on 1 and Matsoukas made a split save with her glove, robbing the Terriers of a game tying goal.

Union found some insurance at the 15:25 mark of the third period. Greco poked a puck away from the Terrier skater in their own zone and Adams skated on to the puck and fired home a shot from the slot to double the Union lead. This was Adams' first tally of the year.

Matsoukas was superb in goal for Union, making 37 saves in the win. This is her sixth career win and moves her into tie for fifth place all time. First-year Amanda Quan was excellent from the face off circle, winning 10 of 13 draws.

Union (3-3-0) will have some time off before traveling to the North Country to kick off ECAC Hockey play against Clarkson on Friday, October 28. Puck drop from Cheel Arena is set for 6 p.m.
