Women's Hoops Falters Late Against Haverford

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Haverford College outscored Union College by a 37-15 margin after halftime as the Fords posted a 60-35 victory over the Dutchwomen on day one of the NYU Tip-Off Classic, hosted by New York University on Saturday evening.

Junior Kennedy Clark recorded a career-high 10 points to go with four rebounds and four steals to lead Union (1-1), while first-year Jelena Perovic chipped in eight points and a team-best eight rebounds as well.

Ally Landau scored a game-high 17 points and Kayla Robinson recorded a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds for Haverford (1-0).

The game started out as a defensive struggle, with both teams managing one basket through the first five minutes of the contest. The teams traded baskets for most of the frame before a brief 4-0 run over the final 1:06 gave the Fords a 10-8 lead after one period.

Back-to-back layups by sophomore Emma Riley and Clark put Union back ahead early in the second stanza, but the game remained close with neither side leading by more than four points. Buckets from Clark and Perovic knotted the score at 20 in the final minute before a three-pointer put Haverford up 23-20 at the break.

Both teams hit nine field goals in the opening 20 minutes. Union was lucky to only be down three after turning the ball over 14 times in the first half, which resulted in Haverford taking 13 more shots (34-21) than their opponents.

Union remained in striking distance during the third quarter, keeping the deficit between six and 10 points. However, Haverford outscored Union 23-7 in the final frame to pull away with the win. The Fords hit 9-of-19 shots from the field over the final 10 minutes and Union connected on just 3-of-13 attempts, as Haverford scored the first 20 points of the frame to pick up the win.

Union will return to action tomorrow for day two of the NYU Tip-Off Classic with a 1 p.m. tip against Alvernia University.
