Union Ties D-I Wins Record with 3-1 Win over Franklin Pierce

WINCHENDON, Mass. – The Union College women's hockey team tied its program Division I wins record with the ninth win of the season, a 3-1 victory over the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University on Saturday afternoon from Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.

The team's nine victories match the previous Division I record first set in 2013-14. The program record for wins in a season is 11, set in the program's last Division III season of 2002-03.

Three different Union skaters found the back of the net. Juniors Celeste Beaudoin and Meredith Killian and first-year Riley Walsh all scored for Union, while sophomores Maren Friday , Emma Hebert, and Ashley Adams as well as first-years Stephanie Bourque and Amanda Quan each chipped in with helpers on the afternoon.

The Dutchwomen grabbed an early lead just three minutes into the contest. Beaudoin deflected a point shot from Bourque in the high slot and beat the Ravens netminder. This was Beaudoin's fourth goal of the season. Hebert grabbed a secondary assist on the goal.

Union doubled the lead nine minutes later. Walsh tipped in a shot from the right point by Friday to earn her 10th goal of the season. She is the first Union player to reach double digits in the goals column in a season since Katelynn Russ '20 and Haley Shugart '20 scored 16 and 10, respectively, in 2017-18. Her fourth game-winning goal of the season also ties the school single-season record set by Molly Flanagan '05 in 2002-03 and matched by Cheyenne Harris '20 in 2017-18.

Franklin Pierce cut into the Union lead on the player advantage with five-minutes remaining in the first period, but Union scored the lone goal of the second period to regain the two-goal edge. Quan had a point-blank shot drift wide and Adams re-centered the pass for Killian, who snuck the shot underneath a sprawling Franklin Pierce goalie with 3:45 to go in the period.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the third frame, as the Dutchwomen held on to a 3-1 lead and earned their ninth win of the season.

Sophomore Sophie Matsoukas was excellent in net when she had to be, stopping 25 of 26 shots as she grabbed her ninth win of the season. With her ninth win, she matched Dana Smullyan (2002-03) and Shenae Lundberg (2013-14) for the school single-season wins record.

Despite having their successful penalty kill streak snapped at 31 straight, Union killed off 8-of-9 player-down situations to pull out the victory.

Union (9-9-1, 3-5-1) will take some time off for the holiday break before returning to action on Monday, January 2 when the team plays host to St. Michael's at 1 p.m. from Messa Rink.
