Men's Hoops Falls in Liberty League Opener at SLU

CANTON, N.Y. - St. Lawrence University outscored Union College by 14 points in the second half as the Saints escaped Burkman Gymnasium with a 74-69 win over the Dutchmen in both teams' Liberty League opener on Friday night.

Trent Adamson led all players with 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead St. Lawrence (4-1, 1-0 Liberty League), while senior Brian Noone led four Union (0-6, 0-1 Liberty League) players in double figures with 19 points and seven assists. Senior Mike Manley and first-year Aren Cummings added 12 points each, and junior Luke McGarrity added 10 points off the bench.

Union got off to a great start on Friday night, hitting 14-of-28 shots from the field in the opening stanza. After SLU started out with a three-point play, the visitors scored six of the next eight points to take a 6-5 lead and Union led for the remainder of the half. The Dutchmen used a 10-3 run late in the half to build up its largest lead of the game at 35-23 after a McGarrity jumper with 1:24 left.

Union went into halftime with a 35-26 advantage, as the defense limited St. Lawrence to 34.5 percent (10 of 29) shooting.

The visitors still led by seven early in the second half after a three by senior Justin Regis made the score 40-33, but SLU followed with a 12-3 run to take back the lead at 45-42 with 13:00 on the clock. Back-to-back layups by Cummings gave Union its last lead at 54-51 at the midway point of the half, but the visitors came up empty on the next five possessions as the Saints went on a 7-0 run to take back the lead.

Union whittled the lead down to one point on two occasions over the final two minutes, the last coming after a pair of Noone freebies with 56 ticks left. However, St. Lawrence milked the shot clock and got a layup from Will Engelhardt to take a 72-69 lead, and a missed three allowed the Saints to seal the game from the charity stipe.

Union finished the game shooting 48.1 percent (26 of 54) from the field, but hit only 52.9 percent (9 of 17) of its attempts from the line. St. Lawrence shot 58 percent from the field in the second half to finish the game at 46.7 percent (28 of 60) and also held a big 42-26 edge on the glass, which resulted in an 11-1 edge in second-chance points.

Union will return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. when the team makes the short trip to Potsdam for another Liberty League matchup with Clarkson University.
