Men's Hoops Closes 2022 at Mount Saint Vincent

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Union College men's basketball team was outscored by nine points in the second half as the Dutchmen finished off its 2022 schedule with a 79-72 defeat to the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Friday night at the Peter Jay Sharp Center.

Senior Brian Noone was the top scorer for Union (1-9), netting 18 points with 10 points for his second double-double of the season. First-year Aren Cummings added his first career double-double with 10 points and a team-best 12 rebounds, while senior Mike Manley added 10 points.

Dan Porcic led Mount St. Vincent (4-7) with a game-high 26 points on 7-of-17 shooting from long range, followed by DJ Tucker with 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Joshua Cabezudo (15 points) and Aaron Darab (12 points) also reached double figures for the Dolphins.

The home team jumped out to an early lead on Friday, scoring the first seven points of the game and taking a 17-5 lead five minutes into the contest. A 14-4 run got Union right back into the game, and the visitors closed the half with a 13-4 run over the final 4:55 to take its first lead at 34-32. Senior Mike Concannon led the charge with six points during the run, which concluded with a layup by senior Chris Lovisolo in the final seconds to put Union ahead for the first time.

Concannon hit a three to bump Union's lead up to five at 37-32 early in the second stanza, but seven straight points from CMSV quickly erased the Union advantage. The Dutchmen used a 9-0 run midway through the frame to take a 60-56 lead with 7:32 on the clock, led by four points from Noone and a three from senior Sean Regis.

However, Mount St. Vincent responded with a 14-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 70-60 lead with 2:19 remaining, as Union missed all five shots from the field and turned the ball over three times. Union could get no closer than six the rest of the way.

Both teams hit 26 field goals on the evening, but Mount St. Vincent shot better from the line and from beyond the arc to pull out the win. Union hit only 2-of-16 attempts from long range in the second half to finish the game at 28.0 percent (7 of 25) from three-point land and 37.7 percent (26 of 69) from the field, while the Dolphins hit 11-of-29 long-range attempts and also sunk 16-of-17 free-throw attempts.

Union will look to turn the page along with the calendar, as the team begins a run of 15 straight Liberty League games on Friday, January 6, 2023 at Skidmore College.
