Union Falls in Overtime at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Union College women's basketball team went cold from the field at the worst possible time, missing all seven field goals in overtime as Vassar College escaped with a 60-54 victory in a Liberty League matchup on Tuesday night at AFC Gym.

Union (3-4, 1-2 Liberty League) shot over 43 percent in three of regulation's four periods to get the game into overtime, but the visitors were outscored 9-3 in the extra frame to suffer the defeat.

Nine different Union players had at least one basket on the night, with senior Megan Lee leading the scoring charge with nine points and eight rebounds. Classmate Olivia Pachla made her season debut on Tuesday with six points, seven rebounds and two blocks off the bench, while junior Kennedy Clark chipped in seven points, five assists and four steals.

Sierra McDermed led Vassar (4-5, 2-1 Liberty League) with a game-high 17 points, followed by Alex Lee and Tova Gelb with 12 points apiece.

Union closed the opening quarter with a 7-2 run over the final 2:05 to take a 16-15 lead after one period of play. Senior Elizabeth Pica had the team's last two buckets to take back the lead, while Clark led the team with five points and two assists over the first 10 minutes.

The visitors limited Vassar to 1-of-11 shooting to start the second stanza as part of a 9-3 run that was punctuated by a three from sophomore Claudia Porto that put Union up 25-18 with 4:08 left in the half. Vassar got back within a possession with 2:03 on the clock, but Union closed on an 8-0 run to take a 33-22 lead into halftime, with junior Maura Conan sending the visitors into the locker room with a last-second three-pointer.

Union shot 54.5 percent (6 of 11) in the second quarter to finish the opening half at 48.1 percent (13 of 27) from the field, while limiting Vassar to 8-of-25 shooting (32.0 percent) and just 3-of-14 shooting from long range.

The third quarter started very differently, however, as Vassar hit four unanswered three-pointers to quickly take back the lead at 34-33 just 2:07 into the period. The visitors went over four minutes without scoring before a three from senior Kendall Degenhardt put Union back up 36-34. Union kept its lead for the remainder of the frame, as neither team scored in the final five minutes to keep the score 38-37 in favor of the visitors.

Union led by as many as five points in the fourth quarter thanks to a 9-0 run capped by a Pachla jumper with 3:55 remaining that made the score 51-46. However, the team's shooting struggles began soon after, as the team did not score for the remainder of regulation. Both teams had a chance to win the game in the final 10 seconds, but Degenhardt had her attempt rattle out with eight seconds on the clock and Vassar's Eliza Srinivasan had her last-second chance bounce off the back iron to send the game to overtime.

The visitors limited Vassar to 33.3 percent (22 of 66) shooting on the evening, but shot just 38.2 percent (21 of 55) from the field.

Union will return to action on Sunday at 3 p.m. with a non-conference game at Middlebury College.
