Men's Hoops Has Postseason Hopes Dashed at SLU

CANTON, N.Y. - The Union College men's basketball team had its 2021-22 season come to a close with a 81-62 loss to St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon at Burkman Gymnasium.

The loss drops Union (11-13, 8-10 Liberty League) out of postseason contention, with the team finishing the season in seventh place. St. Lawrence (16-9, 10-8 Liberty League) finishes the regular season in fourth place and will host a first-round tournament game on Tuesday.

Senior Brian Noone was Union's top scorer on the day with a career-high 29 points and added a season-best 10 rebounds for his second career double-double. Classmate Mike Manley added 18 points in 28 minutes before fouling out, but the remainder of the team only combined for 15 points.

St. Lawrence put Union on its heels from the very start, jumping out to an 18-2 lead with 13:36 left. The Dutchmen missed seven of their first eight shots and turned the ball over three times during the run. The visitors responded with a 10-2 run - capped by a dunk from sophomore Edward Baptiste - to temporarily get back within single digits, but that didn't last and Union went into halftime trailing 39-26.

Noone and Manley kept Union in the game over the opening 20 minutes, combining for 20 of the Dutchmen's 26 points. However, the team finished the frame at 36.7 percent (11 of 30) from the field, compared to 48.1 percent (13 of 27) for the Saints.

Union shot the ball slightly better in the second half, hitting 13-of-32 shots (40.6 percent) from the field, but the team could never get the deficit back to single digits the rest of the way. The Dutchmen finished the evening at 38.7 percent (24 of 62) from the field, while St. Lawrence connected at a 51.8 percent (29 of 56) clip.
