Dutchwomen Stun St. Lawrence, Will Host First-Round Game

CANTON, N.Y. - Juniors Olivia Pachla and Megan Lee scored a game-high 14 points each to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a 54-42 win at St. Lawrence University and the first home postseason game since 2009 in the team's regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon at Burkman Gymnasium.

The win keeps Union (12-12, 10-8 Liberty League) in sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings, marking the first time since 2009 - when the top seed hosted the then-four-team tournament - that the Dutchwomen will play a postseason game at Viniar Athletic Center. Union will host fifth-seeded Rochester Institute of Technology in the first round on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. St. Lawrence (20-4, 14-4 Liberty League) already clinched the third seed and will host sixth-seeded Skidmore College in Tuesday's other first-round game.

Lee had another solid outing for the Dutchwomen, hitting 7-of-11 shots from the field while adding five rebounds, five steals and three assists. Pachla matched Lee with 14 points and added a team-best eight boards and three blocks, while senior Amber Raisner also reached double figures with 11 points and added seven caroms and four assists.

The Union defense also starred on the day, limiting the Saints to 26.7 percent (16 of 60) shooting from the field and forcing 19 turnovers. The offense finished the game at 40.4 percent (23 of 57) from the field.

The first two quarters were a defensive struggle, with Union holding a 19-17 lead after 20 minutes. Union held SLU to just four points over the first seven minutes of the contest, before the home team came alive to take a 13-11 lead after one period. But the tide turned in the second quarter, when the Dutchwomen held SLU to 2-of-16 shooting to take a 19-17 lead at the break.

After a slow first half, Union won the game on the offensive end in the second half, outscoring St. Lawrence 35-25 to pull out the victory. Pachla had nine of Union's 17 points in the pivotal third quarter, while Lee helped close the game with eight points in the fourth. The Dutchwomen shot a stellar 61.5 percent (8 of 13) from the field in the fourth frame while keeping SLU to 4-of-13 shooting.
