SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's basketball team had one of its worst shooting games of the season on Friday night, hitting 22-of-69 shots in a 75-58 defeat to Ithaca College in a Liberty League matchup on Friday night at Viniar Athletic Center.
Senior
Temi George scored a team-leading 12 points to go with six assists and four steals on Friday, followed by classmate
Brian Noone with 11 points and a team-leading eight rebounds. Junior
Sean Regis added 10 points off the bench as well for Union (8-10, 5-7 Liberty League), while Skylar Sinon paced four Bombers in double figures with a game-high 16 points for Ithaca.
Ithaca (12-7, 8-4 Liberty League) used a 14-2 run to take a 17-9 lead with 8:07 gone by in the opening half, and Union was never fully able to claw back to even. Led by six points from George, a subsequent 10-3 run brought the Dutchmen back within one at 20-19 with 5:15 to go, but nearly every Union point had an immediate Ithaca response as the Bombers went into halftime up six at 34-28.
The game turned quickly at the start of the second half, when the visitors scored 13 straight points and kept Union off the scoreboard for more than four minutes to take a 51-33 lead with 13:58 remaining. That run was part of an extended stretch in which Ithaca outscored Union 36-9 over a span of 13:15 to take its largest lead of the game at 70-40 with 6:30 to go.
Union closed the game on an 18-5 run, but it was not enough to get back in range by the final buzzer. Union hit only 31.9 percent of its shots from the field and went 4-of-23 from long range in the defeat, while Ithaca finished at 42.9 percent (27 of 63).
Union will look to shake off the loss tomorrow, when the team welcomes Bard College to Viniar Athletic Center for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
