SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior
Darby Leid scored a game- and career-high 21 points and junior
Megan Lee chipped in 14 points as part of a double-double to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a huge Liberty League victory over Skidmore College on Tuesday night at Viniar Athletic Center.
Leid had a big game for Union (8-12, 6-8 Liberty League), reaching her career-high in scoring before halftime and finishing the game 7-of-14 from the field while adding five rebounds. Lee had a massive game in the paint, scoring 14 points and hauling in a team-best 13 boards to go with three blocks and two steals, while classmate
Olivia Pachla chipped in 12 points and a game-high four rejections.
Skidmore (12-7, 7-7 Liberty League) was led by Julia Blanck, who scored 10 points, grabbed a game-high 16 caroms and blocked four shots, and Kate McCarney, who scored a team-best 18 points.
Leid was red-hot for the Dutchwomen in the opening half, hitting 4-of-5 shots from downtown on the way to 14 first-half points, matching her previous best career-high total in less than 15 minutes of game time.
The teams traded mini-runs in the opening quarter as neither team could gain much separation. Seven straight points for Union were matched immediately by seven straight from Skidmore, but a layup and three from Lee put the home team back up before two free throws tied the score at 18 after one quarter.
The Dutchwomen hit only five field goals in the second stanza, but four of them came from beyond the arc as the team built up a 33-28 advantage. Leid and senior
Amber Raisner both connected from downtown as part of an 8-0 run that put Union up 26-20 with 5:28 left. After Skidmore came back to take a 28-27 lead, Leid hit a three to put the home team back in front and then nailed another just before the halftime buzzer.
The Dutchwoman defense did their best to keep Skidmore at bay in the second half, limiting the Thoroughbreds to 5-of-31 shooting from the field. Union, meanwhile, connected on 17 field-goal attempts in the final 20 minutes, led by nine points from Lee and eight from Pachla.
Union finished the game at 35.7 percent (25 of 70) from the field, but hit on 7-of-15 attempts from downtown and 10-of-14 shots from the charity stripe. Skidmore shot just 26.2 percent (16 of 61) from the field.
The Dutchwomen will close out the regular-season home slate this weekend beginning on Friday at 5:30 p.m. against William Smith College.
