SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sixteen players recorded at least one point as the #9/13 Union College men's lacrosse team scored the first 11 goals of the game in rolling to a 21-5 victory over Plattsburgh State University on Sunday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Senior
Peter Burnes paced Union (5-0) with four points on three goals and an assist, while seniors
Hayden Frey,
Matthew Georgiades and
Keaton McCann all finished with two goals and an assist as well.
Sophomore
Nolan Flood tied for the game-high in goals with the first three tallies of his collegiate career, one of six Dutchmen - along with junior
Clint Gourdeau, sophomores
Gavin Miller,
Henry Quaintance and
Michael Shaw, and first-year
Hazen Pike - to notch their first collegiate goals on the day. Junior
Cooper Weidner and first-year
Archie McEvoy also recorded their first career points as well in the victory.
The Dutchmen asserted themselves quickly in the non-conference matchup, scoring eight times on 18 shots in the first quarter to take an 8-0 lead. Burnes (three), Frey (two) and McCann (two) accounted for seven of the team's eight tallies in the opening frame, while sophomore
Peter Kip also found the net.
Union outshot Plattsburgh 20-3 in the second stanza while adding six more goals to the ledger. Georgiades and Gourdeau scored 20 seconds apart midway through the frame before Plattsburgh got on the board with two Stephen Kane scores. Union then closed with three in a row, including the first in the careers of Flood and Quaintance in the final minute to put Union up 14-2 at the half.
With the starters sitting for the entirety of the second half, Union continued to retain possession and control over the final 30 minutes. Five goals in the first 4:01 of the third quarter gave the home team its largest lead of the day at 19-2, and the Dutchmen added goals from Shaw and Miller in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
The home team was again dominant at the faceoff X as well on Sunday, winning 24 of 30 draws. Senior
Sam Byrne won 5-of-6 draws and sophomore
Matthew Paolatto won 4-of-6 in the opening half, while first-year
Luke McHugh took most of the draws the rest of the way and was successful on 15-of-18 attempts with a game-high 12 ground balls.
Senior
Reed Karaska earned his first collegiate start and picked up the win, making four saves in 35:42 before giving way to first-year
Ward Tucker, who stopped three shots in his collegiate debut.
Union will take some time off for final exams before returning to action on March 22 with a matchup against Middlebury College beginning at 4:30 p.m. in Schenectady.
