BEVERLY, Mass. – Senior
Brian Davis led all players with three goals and classmate
Hayden Frey recorded a game-high four points as the #11/12 Union College men's lacrosse team remained unbeaten with a 13-8 victory over Endicott College in a non-conference matchup at Hempstead Field on Wednesday evening.
Davis was one of four multi-goal scorers for Union (2-0), finding the net three times on five shots, while Frey scored twice and added two assists for a four-point outing. Fellow senior
Peter Burnes and sophomore
Justin Greene chipped in two goals apiece for the Dutchmen as well in the victory. Domenic Russo scored a team-leading three goals for Endicott (0-1).
For the second straight game, Union came out strong and established a lead in the opening frame, scoring four unanswered tallies. The visitors scored on their first three possessions of the afternoon, as Frey put Union on the board 1:51 into the contest before Davis found the net 51 seconds later and Greene scored 1:13 after that to quickly put the Dutchmen up by three. The defense also stood tall, forcing Endicott into nine turnovers over the opening 15 minutes and getting three saves from sophomore
Dan Donahue, before senior
Kieran McGovern scored a man-up tally with 1:42 left.
The teams played the second quarter evenly, with both teams scoring four times. Davis gave Union a 5-0 lead on the first possession of the period, but Endicott came back with two in a row to get back within three. After fending off several Gull possessions, Union struck three times in 1:32 to quickly regain control, with a Frey goal sandwiched between tallies from sophomore
Zach Davis and senior
Owen Toland.
Burnes and senior
Keaton McCann scored early in the third quarter to match Union's largest lead of the night at 10-4, but again the home team would not go away, scoring three times to get within three heading into the fourth. But Union once again turned the tide by scoring on its opening possession of the fourth, with Burnes netting his second followed soon after by Davis' third of the contest. Greene rounded out the scoring with 9:11 left and the visitors were content to play good defense and wind down the shot clock to preserve the victory.
Union finished the game with a 38-32 edge in shots and went 2-for-5 in man-up situations. Senior
Sam Byrne won 10-of-14 faceoffs on the day, while Donahue had another good game in goal for the Dutchmen by turning aside 14 shots.
Union will return to Massachusetts again on Saturday when the Dutchmen head to Springfield College to battle the Pride beginning at 1 p.m.
