AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Union College baseball team snapped a four-game skid with a doubleheader sweep against Lawrence University in the final games in Florida Wednesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park. The Dutchmen won game one, 10-2, and game two 13-7.
Senior
Jack DiNanno was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate between the two games, scoring three runs.
GAME 1: Union 10, Lawrence 2
DiNanno went 3-for-3 at the plate in game one, scoring two runs, and bringing in two more. Junior
Jack Milone went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore
Ryan Cowles brought in two runs and scored one in a 1-for-2 effort at the plate.
The Dutchmen got things started in the bottom of the second inning with a leadoff single by DiNanno, who advanced to second on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt. First-year
Sam Strazza and junior
Jack Davis both drew walks to load the bases with two outs. An RBI single to center field by Cowles gave Union a 2-0 lead.
The Vikings scored a run in consecutive innings to tie the game at two going into the bottom of the fourth.
Union broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning. Sophomore
Sebastian Pike laid a bunt down to get to first base to open the inning. Junior
Dan Choate reached first on an error while Pike made it to third. Davis hit a sac fly to right field to bring Pike home. The Dutchmen loaded the bases and a single into left field by Milone brought two more runs in. A two-RBI single by DiNanno put the Dutchmen up 7-2.
The garnet and white added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Union loaded the bases twice in the inning, scoring one run on a sac fly by Strazza, and capitalizing on an error to score a pair.
On the mound, sophomore
Deven Smith earned his first collegiate start and pitched his first complete game. Smith struck out seven batters, surrendered two runs on four hits, and allowed three walks in seven complete innings.
GAME 2: Union 13, Lawrence 7
Four Dutchmen put together a multi-hit game in the second game. The 1-2 combo of sophomore
Thomas Parisi and Milone were mirror images on the stat sheet with both players going 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Senior
Justin Cabanas added two RBIs and two runs scored in a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.
Trailing 5-2 going into the top of the sixth, the Dutchmen rattled off seven runs to take a 9-5 lead, before adding another four to put the game out of reach.
The Dutchmen got things started in a similar fashion to game one, scoring the first run of the game off an RBI single by senior
Colby Nash in the second inning.
Lawrence was quick to respond, plating three runs in the bottom half of the second to take a 3-1 lead. The Dutchmen made it a 3-2 game at the top of the third when Cabanas singled to right field to bring Milone home.
The Vikings tallied their fourth run off an RBI-triple before taking a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Union racked up seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 9-5 lead. Three straight Dutchmen reached on an error, before DiNanno sent a single up the middle to score the second run of the inning. Back-to-back doubles by junior
Jono Santos and Parisi brought three runners home.
After loading the bases in the top of the seventh, Milone sent a two-run RBI single to center field. One batter later, sophomore
Kobe Mentzer sent the ball into left for an RBI and Strazza brought in the final run for the Dutchmen on an RBI-single.
Lawrence added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh off of a two-run homerun to right field, but could not complete the comeback as the Dutchmen came away with the series sweep.
Junior
Harry Azadian earns the win for the Dutchmen, improving to 1-1 this season. Azadian entered the game in relief in the fifth inning, striking out two and allowing only one hit in a scoreless inning of work.
The Dutchmen return home to open Liberty League play this weekend against Clarkson University. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Shuttlesworth Park in Amsterdam.
