SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Despite a game-high five points from senior
Grace Heiting, the Union College women's lacrosse team came up just short to Williams College in an 11-9 non-conference matchup up Wednesday evening at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Heiting led all players in scoring with four goals and an assist on the night, followed by junior
Sydney McPartlon with two goals for Union (2-3). Williams (2-4) was led by Madison Fulcher-Melendy with a team-high four goals and Isabel Arvelo with three goals and five draw controls.
Union got on the board first 4:07 into the contest with McPartlon's 14th tally of the season, but two goals by Arvelo started a string of three straight for the visitors to give Williams a 3-1 lead. Heiting got the Dutchwomen back within one just 32 seconds later, but – in a theme that would occur multiple times throughout the night – the home team could not get back to even as Williams scored again to regain its two-goal edge after 15 minutes.
After Arvelo scored 11 seconds into the second quarter, the Dutchwomen strung together three of the next four tallies, with two goals by Heiting getting Union back within two (6-4) at halftime before another McPartlon tally to start the third quarter again made it a one-goal game. Two goals by Williams were followed by two from Union, as juniors
Drew Charlton and
Katie Julien again got the home team within one at 8-7 head into the fourth.
Union was unable to string together multiple goals in the final stanza, however. The Dutchwomen responded to a pair of Eph goals with tallies of their own from Heiting and first-year
Greta Maurer, but could not get the score back to even. Fulcer-Melendy finished off the contest in the final 15 seconds with her fourth of the game.
Union took care of the ball well, turning it over just 10 times, but Williams held an 18-6 edge in draw controls to gain those crucial extra possessions. Senior
Jenna Paszek made six saves and allowed six goals in the first half, while sophomore
Hannah Dubinsky made three saves on eight shots in the second half. Williams' Caitlyn Joyce made 11 saves to earn the win.
Union will return to conference play with a matchup at #9 Ithaca College on Saturday at noon.
