POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Union College softball team traveled to Clarkson University for a double header on Sunday afternoon at Scott Field. Union was swept losing game one 15-6 and 5-1 in game two.
Junior
Karson Saunders went 3-6 including a homerun, with four RBIs and scored two runs herself in the doubleheader. Junior
Amanda Granato went 3-7 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Game One: Clarkson 15, Union 6 (6 innings)
First-year
Jessie Rooney started game one and finished two innings and allowed four runs. Granato relieved her the top of the third inning. First-year
Riley Callahan pitched in the sixth inning. Union and Clarkson went back and forth scoring runs throughout all of game one.
Union broke through in the top if the first inning. After Saunders singled, classmate
Olivia Valery singled Saunders in from second to give Union a 1-0 lead. Union added another run in the top of the second with a solo home run coming off the bat of first-year
Nahnny Sobetzko. This was her first collegiate home run for Union.
Clarkson gained their first lead in the bottom half of the second on a three-run home run. Clarkson added their fourth run of the inning on a double to left field. Clarkson led 4-2.
Senior
Julissa Malana reach first in the top of the third after being hit by a pitch. Granato reached on a bunt that moved Malana to third. Saunders approached and belted a three-run home run over the left field fence. Union regained the lead 5-4.
In the bottom of the third, the Golden Knights tallied twice to jump back in front 6-5. Granato helped herself out I the fourth inning as she doubled in Malana from second to even things up.
Clarkson put the game out of reach with a five run fifth inning, coming off a grand slam and a double that scored five. Clarkson led 11-6 after the fifth. Clarkson added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to win 15-6.
Rooney threw two innings allowing four runs on four hits and a strikeout. Granato (4-1) earned the loss in three innings of work, allowing seven runs (3 earned runs) and a strikeout. Callahan allowed four runs on four hits in the sixth.
Game Two: Clarkson 5, Union 1
Clarkson broke through in the bottom of the first inning. The Golden Knights plated two runs to take a 2-0 lead. Clarkson extended their lead to 5-0 after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, Union scored on a single by Saunders. Granato reached first on a single and then scored on a bad throw following the single. Union cut the lead to 5-1, but this was as close as they would get. Clarkson win 5-1.
Granato threw five innings allowing 5 runs (3 earned runs) and striking out one. Senior
Rochelle Nuqui threw one inning striking out one and walking two batters.
Union (9-5, 0-4) will head home for the home opener against Russell Sage College for a double header on Tuesday, April 12, at Alexander Field. Game one begins at 3:30 p.m.
