McCann and Frey Reach 100-Goal Milestones in #4 Union's 19-7 Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Seniors Keaton McCann and Hayden Frey both reached the 100-goal plateau for their careers to lead the #4 Union College men's lacrosse team to a 19-7 victory over Skidmore College in a Liberty League matchup on Wednesday night at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

While there were many stars on the night for Union (12-1, 4-1 Liberty League), McCann and Frey stole the show with their milestone evenings. McCann celebrated with six goals and three assists for a career-high nine points, and with his second of the night became the 10th Dutchman in program history to reach triple figures in goals. Frey added a goal and two assists to join the 100-goal club as well, and with his three points moved into ninth place on the school's career points list with 150.

Classmates Peter Burnes and Brian Davis also had huge games for the home team as well: Burnes matched McCann with six goals and added two assists for eight points, while Davis scored once and dished out four assists. The six goals by McCann and Burnes are the most by a Dutchman since Chris Collison scored six against SUNY Potsdam on March 2, 2007, while McCann's nine points are the most by a Union player since at least 2003.

As a team, Union improved to 12-1 for just the second time in program history, matching the 2019 squad that also won 12 of its first 13 contests.

Burnes had the hot hand early for the home team, scoring three of the first four goals as the Dutchmen jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 15 minutes of play. The defense limited Skidmore to just one shot on goal in the opening quarter. It was McCann's turn to heat up in the second stanza, finding the net three times as Union retained its four-goal lead AT 8-4 heading into halftime.

Union finally broke the game open in the second half, outscoring Skidmore 11-3 after the break. McCann scored twice off beautiful feeds from Davis in the opening two minutes of the third period, followed soon after by a tally from senior Kieran McGovern. After a pair of goals by sophomore Peter Kip, Frey finally scored his elusive 100th career tally in the waning seconds of the third quarter to give Union a 14-6 lead.

Burnes scored his second hat trick of the game in the fourth frame, while McCann and senior Matthew Georgiades added one apiece as well over the final 15 minutes.

Union doubled up Skidmore 50-25 in shot attempts on the evening, while sophomore Dan Donahue and senior Reed Karaska combined to make seven saves.

Union will continue its three-game homestand on Saturday with a noon matchup against Ithaca College.
