Comeback Falls Short for Dutchmen in Conference Finale

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team nearly pulled off a huge comeback in singles play, but the Dutchmen came up just short in closing out the Liberty League slate with a 6-3 loss to Vassar College on Saturday afternoon at Josselyn Courts.

Union (5-10, 3-5 Liberty League) missed out on a chance to clinch a conference tournament berth with the loss, but the team is still alive in the rush for the postseason. Union would still make the Liberty League Tournament if St. Lawrence University can defeat Ithaca College next Saturday.

Seniors Ioannis Binopoulos and Nick Weitzman earned a victory for the Dutchmen at third doubles, posting an 8-4 win over Arun Guruswamy and James Balon to keep the visitors within striking distance heading into singles play.

The wins kept coming for senior Cameron Klepper in singles play, as he ran his personal winning streak to nine matches with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Arnav Agostinho at fourth singles. First-year Ben Jacobs also posted a hard-fought victory over Matthew Yee at second singles, coming back from a set down for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory. The two victories kept Union alive after Vassar had taken the first two singles points.

Binopoulos and junior Thomas McGuire almost completed an incredible comeback for the Dutchmen, taking both of their matches into three sets as well. Binopoulos came just short in his first-singles matchup, winning the first set 6-2 before dropping a second-set tiebreaker and coming one break short in the third. McGuire almost came back from a set down at sixth singles, also coming one break short in a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 defeat.

Union will close out the regular season on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. match against SUNY Oneonta at the Union Tennis Courts.
