ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A three-run homerun by senior
Colby Nash in the first inning and a double-digit strikeout performance by sophomore
Bryce Fournier led the Union College baseball team to a 6-0 win and the series victory over Rochester Institute of Technology Sunday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
Fournier struck out a career-high ten batters through six innings and only allowed one hit to earn his first win of the season. In relief, sophomore
Kyle Patlove picked up his first save of the season with three scoreless innings of work, fanning three and allowing only one hit.
This is the second time this season Union has held opponents to two hits in a game, after previously holding Keuka College to two hits in a 15-3 victory on March 20. The last time Union shutout an opponent was a 15-0 victory on February 27, 2020 against Purchase College while the last time the Dutchmen blanked a Liberty League opponent was an 8-0 win over Rochester in the Liberty League Championship on May 12, 2018, which sent Union to the NCAA Tournament.
Four Dutchmen recorded multi-hit games in the victory. Nash was 2-for-5 with three RBIs from his first-inning home run, and a run scored. Sophomore
Thomas Parisi, first-year
Sam Strazza, and junior
Jono Santos all recorded two hits each.
The Union bats were hot in the first inning as six different Dutchmen recorded a hit. After three singles in a row loaded the bases, sophomore
Kobe Mentzer reached first on a fielder's choice and senior
Jack DiNanno crossed the plate. With runners on first and third, Nash launched a homerun into center field to clear the bases and give Union a 4-0 lead. Union wasn't finished as sophomore
Thomas Parisi doubled into left field and first-year
Nick Hiltsley drove a single up the middle to bring the centerfielder home.
Union added their sixth and final run in the top of the fourth.
Ryan Cowles drew a walk and first-year
Sam Strazza singled through the right side. After a throwing error put Cowles on third, junior
Jono Santos dropped a single in center field to bring Cowles home and give Union a 6-0 lead.
John Arnold takes the loss for RIT, allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits, and striking out five through four innings.
The Dutchmen return home for the series finale with Bard College on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Shuttleworth Park.
