SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior
Julissa Malana ended her final home game as a member of the Union College Softball in dramatic fashion, with a one out walk off hit to help the Dutchwomen to a Sunday afternoon sweep of Skidmore College. Union won game one 7-6 and game two 3-2 on Senior Day.
Junior
Olivia Valery was 3-6 on the afternoon with two singles, a double and a RBI. First-year
Tatum Perkins was 2-3 in game two with an RBI and double as well.
Game One: Union 7, Skidmore 6
Skidmore College jumped out to a quick lead in the opening inning, as they scored five runs on two hits. Union began their slow comeback in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs in the inning and a runner on first, Valery hit a fly ball to left field. The left fielder misplayed the ball and dropped the ball, which allowed junior
Karson Saunders to score from first. Union trailed 5-1.
The Dutchwomen continued to chip away at the Skidmore lead in the bottom of the second. With two outs again in the inning, senior
Lindsey Podlaski singled in first-year
Faith Hughes from second. Junior
Tara Hartnett then scored Podlaski on another dropped fly ball by Skidmore. Union trailed 5-3 after two innings.
Union found their lead in the fourth inning. Following two singles from junior
Amanda Granato and Hartnett. Malana singled down the left line and scored Granato. Saunders then hit a triple to right center and plated both Hartnett and Malana. This gave Union a 6-5 lead. Valery then singled in Saunders to put the Dutchwomen up two after four innings.
In the top of the seventh inning, Skidmore found themselves down a run after a double that scored one. With the bases loaded and two outs, Skidmore hit a ball back to Granato who flipped the ball to first-year catcher
Nahnny Sobetzko for the force out a home, securing a game one come from behind win for Union.
Granato (9-6) earned her ninth win of the season. She came in relief for senior
Rochelle Nuqui who started the game. Granato threw 5.1 innings, while striking out three and allowing one run on seven hits. Nuqui went 1.2 innings, while allowing five on two hits.
Game Two: Union 3, Skidmore 2
After three and half scoreless inning, the garnett and white broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Valery doubled to left field and with two outs in the inning, Perkins doubled to right center and scored Valery on the play. Union lead 1-0.
In the top half of the fifth, Skidmore blasted a two tun home run to regain the lead, 2-1. Union shut things down from there and set themselves up for a walk off win. First-year
Morgan Napier pinch hit for Podlaski and singled through the left side. Podlaski then pinch ran for Napier. Hartnett then batted and tripled down the right field line, scoring Podlaski. Union tied things up at 2-2. Malana then hit a ball to the second baseman and the second baseman was unable to beat Hartnett to the plate, and Union won the game 3-2.
First-year
Riley Callahan (2-0) earned her second win of the season with three innings of work. She didn't allow any hits or runs and struck out one batter in the final three inninsg of the game. Granato started the game and threw three innings, striking out one and allowing no runs on two hits. Nuqui also stepped into the circle for one inning and allowed two runs on five hits.
The Dutchwomen (18-10, 4-8) end their eight-game home stand 6-2 and will have some time off before getting back on the road for a Liberty League double header against Rochester University. First pitch on Friday is at 1 p.m.
