AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – Knotted at five going into the bottom of the ninth inning, sophomore
Thomas Parisi sent a sac fly into right field while classmate
Kobe Mentzer sprinted home to give the Union College baseball team a 6-5 walk off victory over SUNY Cobleskill Wednesday night at Shuttleworth Park.
Batting leadoff, sophomore
Ryan Cowles extended his hit streak to seven games with a pair of hits in the win while adding an RBI and a run scored. Mentzer drew a game-leading three walks, including a key walk in the ninth inning that turned into the eventual game-winning run.
After two scoreless innings to open the game, the Fighting Tigers took a 3-0 lead. Union was quick to answer back, scoring two in the bottom of the frame of an RBI single by first-year
Sam Strazza and a sac fly by junior
Jono Santos.
The visitors added a run in both the fifth and sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead. It was the steady offensive attack by the Dutchmen, who scored a run in each of the final four innings to take a 6-5 walk-off win. Senior
Colby Nash crossed home in the sixth to score his fourth run in two days.
Santos hit his second sac fly of the game in the seventh inning to bring senior
Justin Cabanas across the plate to make it a 5-4 game. First-year
Nick Hiltsley was key off the bench in the eighth inning, hitting a leadoff double in his solo at-bat and scoring two batters later to tie the game.
After drawing back-to-back walks and key baserunning on a wild pitch to put runners on second and third with one out, Parisi hit a sac fly into right field to end the game.
Sophomore
Kyle Patlove earns the win for the Dutchmen to improve to 1-1 after pitching two innings, striking out three, and allowing one hit. Jordan Stone falls to 0-1 on the season after allowing two runs on two hits, two walks, and striking out one.
The Dutchmen look to extend their three-game win streak this weekend with a pivotal Liberty League matchup with RPI on Saturday. First pitch for the senior day doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Shuttleworth Park.
